Glendale, California

Glendale is the third largest city in Los Angeles County and is located at the eastern end of the San Fernando Valley. The population is approximately 200,000. Sun Valley and Sunland-Tujunga are to the northwest, La Canada-Flintridge and La Crescenta are to the northeast, Burbank, Atwater Village and Griffith Park are to the west, Eagle Rock and Pasadena are to the west, and Los Angeles is to the south. Downtown Los Angeles is approximately ten miles to the south. Glendale is located where the San Fernando Valley meets the San Gabriel Valley. The Verdugo Mountains are partially within the City of Glendale.

 

Brand Park - Glendale

Brand Park is a 31 acre park located at the base of the Verdugo Mountains in Glendale. The park is home to the Brand Library and Art Center and offers hiking trails, biking trails, basketball, softball, a children's wading pool and play area, and extensive picnic areas and open space.

 

Glendale Open Space Preserve

Verdugo Mountains Open Space Preserve

The Glendale Open Space Preserve, also known as the Verdugo Mountains Open Space Preserve is a beautiful 244 acre preserve in the Verdugo Mountains in the Upper Los Angeles River Watershed located in Glendale. The preserve contains more than 2,300 mature oak trees, sycamores, big leaf maples, and bay laurels, numerous springs and streams, and other indigenous trees and plants. There is an extensive network of trails on the property.

 

Deukmejian Wilderness Park

Le Mesnager Stone Barn

The Deukmejian Wilderness Park consists of 709 acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains at the far north end of Glendale. The park is primarily chaparral and sage scrub, but includes secluded streamside woodlands and some big-cone spruce in the Dunsmore and Cook's Canyon. Some of the trails offer great views of the Crescenta Valley and Los Angeles Basin. Deukmejian Wilderness Park is home to a historic building constructed in 1898 that served as a stone barn that was used to make wine. The site is known as the Le Mesnager Barn, named after George La Mesnager, a French emigrant and wine maker.

 

Henderson Canyon

Henderson Canyon Park

Henderson Canyon Park is located in Glendale on the eastern slopes of the Verdugo Mountains. Trails lead to Brand Park, La Tuna Canyon Park, and the Verdugo Mountain Open Space Preserve. Access is at the end of Mesa Lila Road in Glendale. The area is covered with beautiful wildflowers in the late winter and spring.
