Poway, California

Poway, incorporated in San Diego County in 1980, is located in East County. The City of San Diego is to the west and Escondido is to the north. The unincorporated community of Ramona is located to the east. The Kumeyaay people lived in the area for centuries before the colonization by Spain and later by Mexico. The Community Church of Poway, the first church in Poway, has remained in operation since 1887 and is now a landmark. Large employers in Poway include General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Pomerado Hospital. Parks and recreation include: Aubrey Park, Blue Sky Ecological Reserve, Old Poway Park, Starridge Park, Poway Community Park, and Lake Poway.

 

Old Poway Park

With its historic buildings and working railroad, Old Poway Park invites visitors to experience California around the turn of the 20th century. The nearly 5-acre park is in the heart of Old Poway which is centered along Midland Road from Twin Peaks Road to the north and Hilleary Place to the south. Buildings are designed to contribute to the historic character of the area. The architectural styles represents early Poway Valley, once a prosperous area for crop and dairy farming.

 

Lake Poway Dam and Reservoir

Lake Poway Dam, completed in 1972 near Poway in San Diego County, created Lake Poway Reservoir for the purpose of storing and supplying water, and providing recreational opportunities which include fishing for trout, bass, catfish, sunfish, and bluegill. The beautiful 35-acre lake has a 2.75-mile loop trail that circles the lake and links to other trails including the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve trail to Lake Ramona.

 

Poway Historical and Memorial Society

Since 1986, the Poway Historical and Memorial Society, located in Old Poway Park, has been dedicated to preserving the unique and fascinating history of Poway through artifacts, photos, memorabilia, historic buildings, and research for the benefit of the public.

 

Poway Chamber of Commerce

The mission of the Poway Chamber of Commerce is to strengthen prosperity for members and the business community by providing leadership, education, advocacy, and networking. The chamber serves and welcomes members throughout Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Scripps Ranch, Sabre Springs, 4S Ranch, and beyond. The chamber is growing and welcomes new members.

 

Poway-Midland Railroad

The Poway-Midland Railroad, founded in 1991, is a heritage railroad located within Poway Park. The railroad is owned by the City of Poway and maintained and operated by the Poway-Midland Railroad Volunteers, Inc. Excursions run on most weekends using a 1907 Baldwin steam locomotive. The Poway-Midland Railroad is a major tourist attraction.

 

San Diego Association of Governments

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), established in 1980, is an association of local San Diego County governments that serves as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the county. Its board consists of one board member from each of the eighteen cities in San Diego County. SANDAG, along with the Southern California Association of Governments, are the only metropolitan planning agencies in Southern California There are eighteen federally mandated Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) in California.
